Dr. Germán de Melo

Dr. Germán de Melo has a doctorate in Merchant Marine from the UPC. Since 1990 he has been Professor of the Department of Nautical Science and Engineering at the UPC, Director of the Master’s Degree in Maritime Law and Business and Port Management since 1998 and Director of the Maritime Speciality courses at the UPC Foundation. He was Dean of the Faculty of Nautics of Barcelona for eight years (1994-2001) and Secretary of the Department of Nautical Science and Engineering (1991-1994). Previously he worked as Chief and Engineer Officer on oil, LNG and passenger vessels and as a ship inspector for Lloyd’s Register of Shipping.

He has been external quality auditor of projects of the IV framework programme of the EC DG VII, Researcher of the EC concerted action on Short Sea Shipping, SSS, Researcher in Leonardo da Vinci programmes of the EC, Researcher in the TEMPUS programme of the EC, Main researcher of the Motorways of the Sea project of the DGMM of the Ministry of Public Works, Expert Consultant of the International Maritime Organization IMO, Consultant of the World Bank for Maritime Transport, Principal Investigator of the project on Risk Analysis of Maritime Traffic on the Spanish Coast, Member of the National Commission of Maritime Accidents and Incidents, and author of multiple articles and papers in international conferences.
