The aim of the project was to develop a methodology to determine the capacity of a port terminal depending on the type of traffic. The capacity was calculated for each terminal subsystem and linking it to the service level (quality) for certain values of traffic.
The project was based on a very complete bibliography combined with field data taken in 26 terminals (9 port authorities), separately analyzing container terminals, dry bulk and ro-ro.
The main results of the project include:
- Identification of the main factors that affect the management, operational and planning ratios of port terminals and its parameters for all the subsystems considered in each terminal.
- New management and operating ratios to assess the quality of the port terminal service with formulation to calculate the capacity of each subsystem and terminal.
- A Capacity Manual for each of the three types of the considered terminals. It is a very useful tool for both planning and operational management of the terminals.
