Evaluation and review of the methodologies used to quantify ship emissions in the Port of Barcelona

Client: Port of Barcelona
Dates: 2019-2020

The methodologies adopted to calculate emissions are based on data from a sample of the vessels themselves rather than the values proposed by EMEP/EEA. Sometimes the European Commission’s reference guide (in the absence of better data) uses generic values of ship data not taking into account the specific traffic of each port. Not using the default values of the EMEP/EEA does not mean that the calculations by the Port of Barcelona are invalid. However, given the importance of obtaining a widely accepted emissions quantification based on baseline methodologies, a review of the methodology adopted and the values used to assess ship emissions was conducted and a guide was established for the calculation of emissions which can serve as a reference for other ports.
