An international research project aimed at reducing the risk of fires onboard ro-ro ships. 5000 ro-ro ships cross our waters every day and with growing online purchases and globalisation traffic is increasing. Every year several major ro-ro ship fires break out, often caused by multiple safety barriers failing at the same time. Additional concerns include fire safety regulations not matching advances in technology and the challenges of today’s maritime shipping business. The project analyses the cost effectiveness of safety measures across the entire fire protection chain. It provides a technical basis for the revision of regulations and aims to come up with 20 innovative solutions for strengthening fire prevention and fire management. Cenit-Cimne are working on risk assessment, a cargo fire hazard database, a stowage planning tool and algorithm optimization.
